Leah Charlesworth

Leah has diverse experience within the maintained and academy education sector spanning 31 years at local, regional and national level with over 20 years in executive positions. Her experience ranges from successful school leadership, leading a range of schools in challenging circumstances and through transformational leadership supporting them to improve significantly, to working within three different Local Authority teams in lead roles.

Leah works with a range of schools and academies, providing support, challenge and quality assurance for leaders. She delivers continuing professional development for leaders and staff at all levels that supports them to build the foundations of outstanding provision. Leah is a National Leader of Education (NLE), having led two schools from categories of concern to Ofsted Outstanding, securing and building the latter as a successful Teaching School.

Leah has played a key role in developing and implementing policies, liaising with DfE, RSC and Ofsted. She is passionate about securing the best possible educational provision for all children and has a particular passion for developing reading. Leah has led successful training and development in the leadership and teaching of reading.

Overview of the programme:

25th September, 9.15pm- 12pm

WORKSHOP 1Planning and mapping highly effective Curriculum Intent

-Understanding the National curriculum requirements in your subject and identifying where your curriculum meets these

-Knowing the difference between ‘core and fingertip’ knowledge (C.Counsell)

-Knowing and identifying the disciplinary and substantive knowledge in your subject

-Understanding the core substantive and disciplinary concepts and threads that are essential in your subject and identifying where there are in your curriculum intent.

-Mapping your core concepts through your progression model identifying how knowledge is built sequentially over time.



WORKSHOP 2 –27th November, 9.15am-12pm

Constructing and articulating precise and specific curriculum design in your subject.

-Exploring highly effective and precise models of curriculum progression.

-Understanding how to plan progression that supports the novice teacher to be successful.

-Developing and delivering a well-articulated rationale for your curriculum choices.

-Understanding how to articulate how the curriculum has been built around core concepts through carefully sequenced progression towards cumulatively defined end points from the Early Years through to Y2 or Y6

-Identifying starting points (EY) and next steps (beyond your own provision)


WORKSHOP 3 – 22nd January, 9.15am- 12pm

Ensuring curriculum implementation is effective leading to children learning and remembering content.

-Exploring key principles that underpin strong pedagogical models and identifying how these are delivered in your subject.

-Identifying where lessons are subject specific and when distraction can cause loss of learning

-Articulating what inclusion looks like in your curriculum area and how learning is scaffolded for pupils with SEND

-Understanding high value methodologies for monitoring and supporting the delivery of a strong curriculum subject

-Mapping out a cycle of monitoring that will underpin curriculum implementation and support high quality delivery


WORKSHOP 4 – 19th March, 9.15am-12pm

Developing a clear rationale and methodology for effective assessment across the wider curriculum subjects.

-Understanding and articulating formative and summative assessment

-Reviewing the assessment guidance within the Ofsted research reports and applying these to your curriculum area

-Exploring how to weave your assessment of the curriculum through and within the teaching sequence

-Trialling methodologies for assessment (formative and summative)



WORKSHOP 5 – 7th May, 9.15am-12pm

Championing exemplary practice in your subject.

- Planning and delivering different forms of CPD to support pedagogical improvement

- Coaching practice that supports improvement in your subject

- CPD securing subject knowledge within your subject.



WORKSHOP 6 – 25th June, 9.15am-12pm

Evaluating and reporting impact in your subject.

-Understanding the improvement planning cycle at a subject level

-Evaluating impact in your subject and articulating this

-Reporting impact in your subject to stakeholders

-Using your evaluation of impact to plan for improvement

-Driving improvement using performance milestones
