This walk will trace the Hebden Water upstream, first to Hebden Bridge Bowling Club to view the ARK installation, and then on to Gibson Mill in the National Trust’s Hardcastle Crags to take in the Arts Trail exhibition in Gibson Mill. On the way we will reflect on the role that water has played in shaping this landscape – incising the steep-sided cloughs, powering the first mills before the coming of steam, supplying the burgeoning industrial towns to the east with drinking water through the construction of reservoirs, and more recently causing havoc with floods which climate breakdown stands to make worse. From Gibson Mill, we will ascend to the ancient hilltop village of Heptonstall to take in views of the entire catchment and consider the role that moorland restoration and other natural flood management techniques will play in making our river systems safer for us and better for wildlife. We will return to Hebden Bridge down the old cobbled packhorse route of The Buttress.
This five-mile walk will take in steep sections; uneven, muddy paths; and long grass that will potentially be wet. There will be stiles to climb and a total ascent of 30 metres.
Tickets £7/£5
