Come along to meet real-life experts and ask them yourself at the book launch of The Conversation's Curious Kids book: Why do Tigers Have Whiskers? And Other Cool Things About Animals!
The event will be chaired by The Conversation’s Liz Minchin and will feature University of Queensland researchers Samantha Nixon and Caitlin Syme and a very Speical 8-legged Guest. And yes, they will be answering all Curious Kids questions in kids-speak, rather than academic jargon.

Dr Caitlin Syme is a palaeontologist and Project Officer at the Office of the Queensland Chief Scientist. She has worked on dinosaur, crocodile and fish fossils from central west Queensland, and uses taphonomy – which is similar to forensic science – to better understand exactly how ancient animals died, decayed and eventually become fossils.
Samantha Nixon is a former arachnophobic turned venoms scientist and spider advocate at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience, The University of Queensland. Her research harnesses the unique chemistries in venoms to develop new medicines. Samantha is an avid explorer, working around the world from the Amazon to the Antarctic. She is a passionate advocate for addressing inequality in STEM, education and leadership through science communication and hopes sharing her passion for spiders will help inspire the next-generation of Australian scientists. Samantha has been recognised with the Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship, the UQ Global Change Scholar Award and Young Science Ambassador Award. Samantha was recently awarded the 2020 Queensland Women in STEM Prize, the 2020 Women in Technology Young Science Achiever Award and the 2020 Green Talent Award from the German Ministry of Education and Research, recognising her as one of the top 25 young leaders in science for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals worldwide.
Liz Minchin is a Walkley award-winning journalist and author, with two decades of experience in newspapers, radio and online. She is The Conversation Australia & New Zealand's Executive Editor — and a mum of two curious kids, aged 6 and 3.
