This 18-mile ride is one of the least hilly of our Curiosity rides, and a very pleasant outing down the Cairn Valley, following the course of the Cluden and then the Cairn. After heading through Lincluden, we ride west along the Irongray Road, a very popular route among local cyclists. We may stop to explore the Irongray Church, and its historic graveyard, and admire the waterfall at the Routin Brig, which is a nice place to pause for lunch.
From there we continue along the Cairn before crossing over at the second bridge (unless people want to cut the ride a little shorter) and taking the Morrington Road back along the other side of the river. Cutting back over the river at the Irongray bridge, we make our way back via the Hardthorn Road and the Maxwelltown Path back to town. https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/4841310703
Rides continue regardless of the weather, unless the ride leader decides it would be dangerous (or no fun) – we normally don’t ride if there are weather warnings or snow and ice on the roads.
There’s no need to book but if you use Facebook you can sign up for the event via our Facebook page. If you’ve any questions or aren’t sure if this ride is suitable then email us ([email protected]) – or you can check out our FAQ (https://cyclingdumfries.wordpress.com/.../winter-rides.../).
You don’t need to be a member to come on a ride, but if you attend regularly (three or more a year) we ask you to join, to ensure you are covered by our insurance. Your membership also supports our year round work – prices start from just £5 per year.
