This 19-mile ride takes us down past Mabie Forest and Kirkconnell Flow to come out at the point where the Nith meets the sea – or at least the Solway. This route does use a busier road for two very short stretches but the rest is on paths, quiet roads and a bit of (well surfaced) forest track. This ride starts using the Maxwelltown Railway path and the offroad path along the Dalbeattie Road, but keeps on going down to the New Abbey Road. From there we do a short stretch along this busy road until we can turn off onto the road that goes past Kirkconnell Flow. We won’t stop at the nature reserve here this time, but keep going, past Kirkconnell House and along the track that services the Scottish Water pumping station at Airds Point itself.
We then retrace our steps back to the New Abbey Road where we can either go back the way we came or, if we feel we have the legs for it, proceed a little further to the Carruchan Beeches road – a lovely little back road with breathtaking views and an equally breathtaking climb to see them (complete with some epic potholes). Then it’s a brisk downhill towards Cargenbridge and along Park Road to rejoin the New Abbey Road and its cycle path to complete the loop back. https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/5563044697/
Rides continue regardless of the weather, unless the ride leader decides it would be dangerous (or no fun) – we normally don’t ride if there are weather warnings or snow and ice on the roads.
There’s no need to book but if you use Facebook you can sign up for the event via our Facebook page. If you’ve any questions or aren’t sure if this ride is suitable then email us ([email protected]) – or you can check out our FAQ (https://cyclingdumfries.wordpress.com/.../winter-rides.../).
You don’t need to be a member to come on a ride, but if you attend regularly (three or more a year) we ask you to join, to ensure you are covered by our insurance. Your membership also supports our year round work – prices start from just £5 per year.
