CURATORS' TALK: Rocks in our Heads with Heidi Gustafson and Devon Deimler

The Philosophical Research Society is pleased to present a group exhibition co-curated by Heidi Gustafson and Devon Deimler titled

Spiritually-charged rocks, soil, metal, and pigment. Intimate acts of alchemy. Renewed cultural practices. Remediations of earth with earth. Elemental magic. The artists of Feeding the Unseen critically engage the metamorphic gravity of living on a mortal planet.

Viewers are invited to witness and absorb artworks that transmute and transform lost, traumatized, or toxic matters: a hermetically sealed weapon slowly dissolving into black ink by alchemists Thomas Little and Dylan Kehde Roelofs; a film of Māori artist Sarah Hudson as she becomes “rocks in all forms”; a sacred drawing in blood by Samurai-descendent Yuri Shimojo in collaboration with ink-maker Jason Logan; a heart-centered sculpture made with ritual white dirt by East African artist Valerie Piraino; honorific rip-rap from nuclear containment sites by geochemist Dr. Morgan Williams; an empowering Tibetan Buddhist treasure vase from His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche’s lineage by Treasure of Abundance; and other potent and auspicious offerings.

is an artist, mythologist, writer, and teacher based in Los Angeles. She’s an adjunct faculty at Pacifica Graduate Institute, where she teaches courses on myth, images, dreams/visions, archetypal psychology, and art/aesthetics in the Depth Psychology and Creativity and Mythological Studies programs. She is Curator of exhibits and events at OPUS Archives and Research Center, home to the collections of James Hillman, Joseph Campbell, and Marion Woodman, among others, and Artist in Residence and Special Editions Editor at the Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles, where she also founded and curated the Cinemyth Film Series.

is an artist and ochre specialist who was born and lives in the rural Pacific Northwest. Her highly collaborative and intuitive projects include a working sanctuary of over 600 ochres and earth pigments from around Earth. Called the “woman archiving the world’s ochers” by the New York Times, and the “ochre whisperer” in American Craft, her work has been featured in several books and publications worldwide. Heidi’s anticipated book debut, Book of Earth : A Guide to Ochre, Pigments, and Raw Color will be published in May 2023.

Parking is available in both front lot (entry from Los Feliz Blvd. when heading east) and back lot (entry from first alley way, off Griffith Park Blvd. from intersection with Los Feliz Blvd.), as well as ample street parking on Griffith Park Blvd.

  • We encourage you to arrive at least 30 min. before the scheduled event start time to find parking, enjoy the Bookstore and take your seats.
  • Please turn off all mobile devices before the show. Talking and texting are not allowed during the events.
  • No filming, audio recording or mobile phone recording of events, screenings, concerts or other programs by audience members is allowed.
  • There is no smoking permitted on PRS grounds.
  • We strongly encourage guests to wear masks to PRS events to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
  • PRS allows Service Animals into the facility under ADA and state guidelines. For further details please visit www.ADA.gov. No animals permitted whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support, under ADA guidelines and CA Health Code.
  • Please do not bring outside food or drink into PRS events.

REFUND POLICIES

All sales are final. There are no refunds or exchanges for PRS events, except in the event of a medical emergency, including but not limited to a positive COVID-19 test.

In the event that PRS is forced to cancel an event entirely, tickets will be​ refunded or vouchers offered for a rescheduled event.
