 Curating Japanese Artists: Exploring Touchpoints in Japanese Contemporary Art for American Audiences.

It’s time to move beyond stereotypical perceptions of Japanese art, such as anime-inspired Murakami-esque works or Zen-style minimalism. While it may be impossible to capture the full diversity of Japanese contemporary art, identifying compelling themes or topics that resonate with American audiences is essential.

This event will feature Liz Faust and Eimi Tagore, two U.S.-based curators with extensive experience working with Japanese artists and recipients of apexart’s open call. They will share insights from their curatorial practices and explore the themes, narratives, and approaches that can serve as effective touchpoints for introducing Japanese contemporary art to American audiences.

Bios:

Liz Faust is an art historian, independent curator, and a professor of contemporary art whose career is centered around weaving diverse narratives and transforming art spaces globally. She has curated over eighty exhibitions ranging from solo exhibitions of living and deceased artists such as: Kei Ito, Marja Pirilä, William Christenberry, and William S. Dutterer; and group shows featuring: Jess T. Dugan, Tommy Bruce, Isao Hashimoto, Wendy Maruyama, Jerrell Gibbs, Qinza Najm, and Kate Kretz.

Eimi Tagore is an independent curator and doctoral candidate of East Asian Studies at New York University. Her research focus is contemporary Transpacific art engaging with colonial history, memory, and politics. Recent curatorial projects include Un / Weaving: Haji Oh (Alison Bradley Projects, 2024), KANTEN 観展: The Limits of History (apexart, 2023), Floating Monuments: Motoyuki Shitamichi (Alison Bradley Projects, 2023), and Fierce Autonomy: Paintings by Yuki Katsura (Alison Bradley Projects, 2021). She was a 2023 Curatorial Fellow at the Shigeko Kubota Video Art Foundation and a 2021 Wikipedia Fellow for PoNJA-GenKon and Asia Art Archive in America, where she focused on Japanese artists who have faced censorship.
