The Cup of Truth series at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights invites guests to grab a cup of coffee and settle down to talk about topics relating to history and social justice. Cup of Truth offers an intimate chat with authors, experts, and speakers where anyone in the community is welcome to come listen and learn. This month we're excited to be in partnership with Charis Books and More, the South's oldest independent feminist bookstore, and an LGBTQ gathering space in metro Atlanta for more than 50 years.Enjoy some coffee on Charis’ front porch before venturing inside to engage with authors Vanessa Ford and Rebecca Kling for a conversation inspired by their co-authored book, The Advocate Educator’s Handbook: Creating Schools Where Transgender and Non-Binary Students Thrive, and The National Day of Silence. The National Day of Silence (April 11, Annually) is an annual day of action organized by GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) to spread awareness about the effects of bullying and harassment of LGBTQ students in schools. On this day, students across the US take a vow of silence to illustrate the silencing effect when LGBTQ students are bullied.
Attendees can pre-order copies of The Advocate Educator’s Handbook: Creating Schools Where Transgender and Non-Binary Students Thrive, as well as the authors’ other books, Calvin and 2 Trans 2 Furious from Charis to pick up at the event!
About the book:
The Advocate Educator's Handbook: Creating Schools Where Transgender and Non-Binary Students Thrive is a critical guide on creating inclusive classrooms for transgender students. This handbook offers a tested framework for educators to use in their journeys to create inclusive classrooms for transgender and non-binary students. Centered on a framework of four principles - educate, affirm, include, and disrupt - this book provides a new way of thinking about inclusivity in the classroom, as well as practical ways to foster students' sense of belonging. The authors bring rich understanding to the topic - Kling as a transgender educator & advocate, Ford as a teacher & parent of a transgender child, and both authors being educators themselves. It contains stories from transgender and non-binary students, teachers, researchers, parents, and more.
Inside the book, you'll find tools that you can start using on day one of being in the classroom. You'll also find model policies for teachers, schools administrators, and public policymakers, so you can begin the important work of advocating for and with trans and non-binary students.
