Care That Connects: Culturally Responsive Mental Health for Marginalized Communities
Learning Objectives:
- Identify key mental health disparities affecting different minority communities, such as Black, Indigenous, Latinx, AAPI, and LGBTQ+ communities.
- Understand the impact of racism, bias, and cultural stigma on access and treatment of mental illness.
- How to apply culturally responsive interventions to build trust and improve therapeutic outcomes.
Dr. Olivia Hopkins, DM, LCSW-S, is an alumna of the University of Texas at Arlington, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts and a Master's in Social Work with a focus on Mental Health and Addictions. She has been a licensed practicing social worker since 2016. Driven by a commitment to lifelong learning, Dr. Hopkins obtained a Doctor of Management in Healthcare Management and Leadership from Colorado Technical University. Her passion for the mental health field led her to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in 2020.
Dr. Hopkins's dedication to teaching and mentorship inspired her to become a clinical supervisor for social workers in 2023. This allows her to guide others in obtaining the highest level of licensure in the profession. In her current role as Director of Clinical Services - Behavioral Health at Texas Health Resources in Dallas, she continues to pursue her passion for mental health by overseeing a 35-bed inpatient psychiatric unit and three outpatient mental health clinics, providing both Partial Hospital Programming and Intensive Outpatient Programming. She also maintains her commitment to teaching and mentorship by providing leadership to a team of over 20 and clinical supervision to those seeking to advance their licenses.
In her free time, she enjoys serving her community as a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. She also sits as a board member for the Stolen Shakespeare Guild, a theatre based in Fort Worth. She was also an active member of the Dallas Derby Devils from 2017 to 2024. Where she sat on the board as the Chairperson for the league in 2020, where she successfully worked to help retain members for a full-contact sport during the peak of the pandemic.
