Deborah Beaumont Martin: Librarian, Historian, and Preservationist.
Deborah Martin was born in Green Bay in 1854. The daughter of Morgan L. Martin and Elizabeth Smith Martin, her parents were among some of the first New York residents of what would become Wisconsin. She spent much of her life studying and writing about the history of the area and Wisconsin. As the director of the Kellogg Public Library she provided books on Wisconsin history, influenced government leaders and the community about the importance of history. She saved structures from demolition by finding other uses for them. Finally, one of her still evident works is the "History of Brown County; Past and Present" published in 1913. She was highly regarded as a librarian, historian and preservationist.
For over 50 years, Mary Jane Herber has been a celebrated historian and genealogist in Brown County, driven by a lifelong love of history. Born and raised in De Pere, she earned her B.A. in History from UW-Green Bay and began her career at the Brown County Library in 1973, later becoming the Local History and Genealogy Librarian. Under her leadership, the library's historical collection grew from 300 to 10,000 volumes, housing some of the region's rarest books. Mary Jane has played a pivotal role in placing over 250 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, organizing a 10-day Heritage Festival celebrating Jean Nicolet, and creating "The Paper Wall Project," honoring Wisconsin’s Vietnam War casualties. As a past graduate of the "Leadership Green Bay," Mary Jane continues to be involved, leading the history portion of the program. Her extensive community involvement spans leadership roles in numerous historical organizations. She is also an avid supporter of the Green Bay Packers, and has extensive knowledge on Packer history. Mary Jane’s enduring advice: “If you live in a community, you have to participate, volunteer, and give back.”
