About this Event

Connected Voice Haref strives for health equity for ethnically marginalised communities in the North East of England.

Our cultural competency training is funded by Newcastle Public Health team and informed by the experiences of people from local communities through the Haref Network. It is free for health and wellbeing practitioners delivering services in Newcastle upon Tyne who wish to improve their reach of services with ethnically marginalised communities. This in person training will enable participants to connect with and deliver effective services to people across marginalised communities. This session is 3 hours long with interactive exercises, videos and discussion points to take back to your organisations.

Learning outcomes

Through a combination of activities and discussion, participants will:

  • Explore what do we mean by culture?
  • Understand the diverse and intersecting characteristics of local communities
  • Develop skills to identify barriers to accessing services
  • Recognise good practice
  • Feel more confident in working with different communities

After the session we provide a resource sheet with information to follow up and a post-session questionnaire to take the learning from the session and put it into practice.

The session will last for 3 hours. There are a limited number of spaces at our events and they are in high demand. If you are unable to attend this event by giving at least 48 hours’ notice. Please cancel your reservation through Eventbrite.

Email [email protected] if you have any questions about booking and cancellations. If you are unable to attend and do not give notice then you will be charged £20.00.

Not eligible for the free training but still interested?

We deliver paid for sessions of Cultural Competency training for organisations outside of Newcastle and you can benefit from a discount when your organisation signs up to become a Haref Ally. You may also be interested in our tailored Cultural Competency training that is suitable for organisations of all shapes and sizes, not just those delivering health services. Contact [email protected] for more information.

Delivery method

This in person event will take place in NCC Civic Centre (room to be confirmed) . We have taken every step to make this as simple, accessible and secure as possible. You will be provided with a note taking sheet via email before the course commences and be provided with a resource page for continued learning after the course.

Accessibility

All our videos will have closed captions (automatic subtitles) enabled. We can also provide a BSL interpreter for training and events on request, but ask you to give us enough advance notice to enable this to be organised. To maximise resources, we are unable to provide BSL interpreters for all sessions unless we know this is essential. If you need any support to access please contact me directly [email protected]

For security and practical reasons:

You can only book one place for yourself, using the email address you use for your role. If a colleague wants to attend, they will need to book separately themselves.

You must give us all the essential information requested so that we know your registration is genuine. We may check with you, especially if you aren't from an organisation known to us

Joining instructions including the secure password, together with any handouts or worksheets, will be emailed to you 24 hours ahead of the session start time by the named person hosting the session. It is essential you do not share this with anyone not registered to attend. Anyone not on the registration list will not be allowed into the session.
