Join us at our annual community food get-together - inspiring talks, opportunity to share skills & network, plus enjoy seasonal soup & pud!
About this Event

Book your place at our community food event.

We'll have inspiring speakers and activities, with a focus on projects in Yeovil and South Somerset. It will be a chance to strengthen connections, and discuss ways we engage - with volunteers, service users, communities, as well as statutory & wider organisations.

Short talks:

Joe Knights: hear about Yeovil's network of growing and green spaces and the supportive work of the South Somerset Environment Forum, which connects projects, shares expertise and organises work parties, which includes the skilled scythers from Able2Achieve.

Sue Wheeler, Yeovil Town Council: with news on the Yeovil Allotments 'refresh' and the emergence of a local Growing Hub.

James Landamore, Spark Somerset: will briefly update us on how Somerset's Vision for Volunteering is shaping up, research insights and also how 'Spark a Change' can be used to match volunteers to your food project.

Practical activities:

  • Chop & chat - help cook up our seasonal soup and pud - share tips and ideas, guided by Kim Robinson, an amazing community cook and one of our trustees (bring an apron)
  • Save & swap seeds - learn tips on saving and storing seeds with Jane Sweetman from Wild Roots, bring seeds to sort and share.
  • Grow micro-greens - decorate and plant up a windowsill garden from recycled materials - a great gardening idea for children, with Lara Honnor from Skool Beanz.
  • Scything demo -learn the basics of scythe assembly and technique with Able2Achieve.
  • Fabulous ferments - Juila Bedford, Herbal Brue, will show you a simple way to store your veg surplus and gluts. Bring an apron and a clean jam jar.

Visit the Westfield Community Garden. Hear how the team are facing the reality and challenges of keeping this community project growing, including finding new ways of working. Just a minute's walk from the centre. Bring a coat / shoes with good grips.

Drop in:

James Ladamore, Spark Someset: find out more and sign up to 'Spark a Change', as well as chat more informally about Somerset's Vision for Volunteering and recent research.

As always, we'll sit down for a seasonal soup and pud we'll have cooked up on the day using local and surplus food, plus share our news.

The event is always a success because of what you make it, either by running a workshop, bringing produce, cake or flowers for the tables, as well as your help on the day with setting up, clearing down and washing up : ) Get in touch if you have something to offer: [email protected]

Travel
It's a great community venue but no car park, so you can drop off, but you will need to find parking in the local area or further afield. Blue Badge parking is available. We have been advised that the Google Maps postcode is not accurate so please aim for St Peters Church - BA21 3DY.

Buses: Yeovil is on a number of main bus routes, however our venue is a 20-30 min walk from the bus station.

Liftshare - use our Facebook page for liftshare requests / contact us - so far we have requests for :
