The pantry is operated by the Nacimiento Community Foundation and is called the Checkerboard Area Food Pantry. We serve families in the Cuba area and surrounding communities, including parts of the Navajo Nation. The pantry is a part of the Roadrunner Food pantry network and is sponsored by Sandoval County and by individual donations. It is held on the second Wednesday of every month at the exhibit hall of the Sandoval County Fair grounds. The Roadrunner food truck arrives at 10:00am.
Every family that attends the pantry will take home about 5 boxes of food. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, we have been operating as a drive-thru. Clients form a line of cars in the parking lot and,one-by-one, drive to the loading area. They never leave their cars. The boxes of groceries that the volunteers have prepared are loaded into their trunks or truck beds.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!
All the volunteers wear masks and gloves and practice social distancing.
Volunteers direct the placement of the food as it comes off the truck and begin to open the crates and boxes. They are given a list of how much of each food item should be put in each bag or box that the clients will take home. There are about 5 stations; one for produce, one for dry goods, one for meat and cold items, one for bread, and another for beverages. Volunteers will be placed at each of these stations to prepare the boxes.
The pantry usually finishes up at about 2:00. We ask the volunteers to arrive at the building at about 10:00 am. They should wear shoes (not sandals). Interested people should contact Peggy McCracken by email ([email protected]), text, or phone at 505-252-3828.
