Dublin has a long and legendary tradition of writers, and since Conor O’Brien adopted the name Villagers, the singer-songwriter-instrumentalist-dramatist has joined the club with a rich, deep and diverse body of work.
Critically acclaimed, Villagers have been awarded Ireland's Choice Music Prize, nominated for UK's Mercury Music Prize and Conor has been awarded two prestigious Ivor Novello's for his songwriting.
Villagers’s sixth studio album, "That Golden Time", released in May 2024 via Domino, underlines O’Brien’s unwavering commitment to a uniquely nuanced, literate and melodic fusion of folk, pop and rock that has won awards and accolades from peers such as Paul Weller, Elvis Costello, Damon Albarn and Guy Garvey.
After the band-centered sessions of Villagers’ fifth album "Fever Dreams", That Golden Time’s solo-centric core was not forced on O’Brien by lockdown. “For me, That Golden Time has an internalized voice, so much so that I almost found it impossible to let anyone else in, to the point of mixing it myself,” he says. “It’s probably the most vulnerable album I’ve made. I played and recorded everything in my apartment, and finally, towards the end, invited people in. But I was always dreaming of embellishments and arrangements so I could never have made a fully sparse solo album.”
