A Cultural Strength-Based Approach to Eating Disorder Treatment

Gabriela Hurtado, PhD, Yasmine Mavrakis, RD, LD; Prickly Pear Therapy and Training & Mavrakis Nutrition

  • Explore barriers for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) in accessing eating disorder care including stigma, systemic racism, insurance disparities, language barriers, and lack of culturally-affirming healthcare.
  • Cultural strengths that BIPOC hold are often understated, especially in eating disorder treatment. These strengths will be explored.
  • Awareness and integration of cultural strengths in treatment can create opportunities for various paths to healing, while expanding our care models from mere cultural competence to culturally-affirming and responsive care.
  • The presentation will share both therapeutic and nutrition applications to support eating disorder clinicians in this area through the review of relevant literature and case studies.



Utilizing DBT with Adolescents and Their Families in the Treatment of Eating Disorders

Susan C. Mengden, PhD, CGP, CEDS-C; Esperanza Eating Disorders Center

  • There is growing research and evidence supporting the use of Dialectical Behavior Therapy with eating disorders.
  • This presentation highlights treatment modifications, adaptations, and in-vivo implementation of DBT skills and concepts with adolescents with eating disorders and their families in a multi-family group.
  • Multi-family DBT groups provide the education and support for parents of adolescents with eating disorders.



Polyvagal Theory in Relation to Digestion and Recovery

Josephine Whitney, MS, RD, LD; Center for Discovery

  • Explore polyvagal theory, the window of tolerance, how hyperactivation and hypoactivation affect digestion, and how to use distress tolerance to widen the window of tolerance.
  • Learn how hunger/fullness cues might be affected by client's level of activation, and how to navigate their resources within various ranges of activation.



Sexuality Considerations in Eating Disorder Treatment

Ester Hooley, PhD; Within Health

  • Explore exuality considerations in the etiology and treatment of eating concerns.
  • Exapnd upon practical tools to help clinicians assess for sexual concerns/considerations in client care.
  • This presentstion aims to help participants feel more empowered to assess sexual concerns in an inclusive and honoring manner.
