About this Event

It is our great pleasure to announce that CSUN Opera will proudly produce 3 operas this 2022-2023 season!

We have some incredible work in store for you and we could use your help in making these productions come to life! There is so much work and resources that go into making these shows possible, from costuming, music rentals, stage design, space rental costs, production equipment, and much more. In order to ensure we can realize the vision our faculty and students have for these operas, we need support from you, our incredible alumni, friends, family, and community. You are one of the most important groups that make our efforts worth it, by supporting us, attending our shows, and sharing your laughter and applause that make everything worth it. We deeply value your commitment to our Opera program, and we look forward to thanking you for your dedication and belief in us.

Fall, 2022

The Music Department, led by Music Director Mercedes Juan Musotto and Stage Director Maurice Godin, is preparing to present a fantastic double-bill of comic opera. The first is Christoph Gluck’s classic opera, L’ivrogne corrigé (The Reformed Drunk.) This is a farcical piece about a hard drinking husband who gets cured of his calamitous ways. The second is a popular new opera by Michael Ching called Speed Dating Tonight, which premiered in 2013. It’s a hilarious look at the ultra modern phenomena of the five-minute date. This piece deals with themes of loneliness and desperation, asking questions like - How the hell do you establish a meaningful connection with someone in five short minutes? How much do you reveal? Do you go for a good first impression or do you dare to go a little deeper and risk exposing yourself to ridicule or rejection? Drawing on the parallels between modern and baroque eras of fashion and music, Hip-hop dancers will be featured in both operas.

Spring, 2023

A rare joint production between CSUN’s Music and Theater Department, we are thrilled to announce our spring opera, Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème led by Music Director Mercedes Juan Musotto and Stage Director Eric Gibson. This will be an expansive, exhilarating production bringing together these two vibrant groups of CSUN artists to recreate this classic and beloved opera. The production will also welcome two local children choirs, the MUSYCA Children's Choir led by Anna Krendel, and the San Fernando Valley Youth Chorus led by Marla Lowrey, to join the production. This will be a very special event, not to be missed!

We will perform these operas in CSUN’s Cypress Recital Hall and The Campus Theater, and we are so looking forward to seeing you there! Many of you reading this are already members of our CSUN Opera community and already know about all the heart and soul that goes into our productions. If you are new to our community, we are thrilled to welcome you! We are very grateful for the support of our community which allows us to meet all the costs involved with creating this work. We depend on your donations which make our operas possible. We truly can’t do it without you! If you would like to be a part of CSUN Opera’s live performances, please support us with a financial contribution. We appreciate your generosity and we cannot wait to welcome you to the community of CSUN Opera!
