CSU Chico University Services Building-A Mass Timber First

Join AIACV’s COTE Committee chair, Tony Amato, AIA, for an exclusive tour of California State University’s first Mass Timber project—the University Services Building at Chico State. This groundbreaking project is a Progressive Design-Build partnership between Dreyfuss + Blackford (Architect), Swinerton Builders (General Contractor), and Chico State.

As the first mass timber structure in the 23-campus CSU system, this two-story, 24,000-square-foot facility represents a significant shift in sustainable building practices. Currently nearing completion, this tour offers attendees a rare opportunity to explore the building before its official opening in early 2025. During the tour, participants will gain insights into:

Swinerton Director of Mass Timber Lisa Podesto emphasizes that early feasibility analysis is crucial in determining structural grids, fire ratings, and MEP distribution. The project team, including Timberlab, played a key role in evaluating materials and fabricating glulam columns, beams, and CLT panels from their Portland, OR, and Greenville, SC, facilities.

Please note this tour is on an active construction site; proper PPE is required. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Safety Note: While nearly completed, this is still an active construction site. Attendees will be required to wear standard Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including a hard hat, protective eyewear, long pants, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and safety vests. No exceptions will be allowed. If you need to borrow a hard hat, protective eyewear, or a safety vest, please let us know; we have a limited number that may be borrowed.
