The UCL Centre for Space Exochemistry Data (CSED) proudly presents the CSED Hackathon 2024.
About this Event

? Are you passionate about space science?

? Ever wonder what it's like to dive into planets outside of our own Earth?

?‍? Want to know the hurdles scientists and engineers tackle in European Space Agency (ESA) missions?

? Or.... you're itching to flex your machine learning muscles with some mission data?

What am I supposed to do?

A hackathon just means that you will be working as a team to tackle a fun and challenging problem. It does not mean you are supposed to come up with a solution (that will be too harsh, after all, ESA Scientists and Engineers spent countless moons on this problem!). We are simply looking for ideas that might hold the potential to be a game changer, and we need YOU to help us! Prize for the winners.

What will you be working on?

You are tasked to come up with innovative solutions to extract vital signals of exoplanets from simulated observations provided by mission experts involved in the ESA Ariel mission.

During the event, you'll have the opportunity to listen to Prof. Ofer Lahav, Vice-Dean (International) of UCL Faculty of Mathematical & Physical Sciences, and Luís Simões, Lead Data Scientist and co-founder at ML Analytics, as they share their experiences in applying machine learning in Space Science from both academic and industrial perspectives.

Sounds interesting, but I dont know anything about Machine Learning/Astronomy

That's fine! From our experience a great solution will only come up with a good mixture of expertises, and we don't expect you to know everything from machine learning to mission to astronomy. Whether you are data scientists, machine learning gurus, astronomers, passionate astronomy students or just machine learning amateurs, you are more than welcome to join us! We do ask for your willingness to work as a team in the challenge, though.

How do I join?

Participation is FREE! You are welcomed to join as an individual or come in a pre-formed team (5 people max). You will be allocated into a team of 4 - 5 people on the day. Individuals from all background and career stages are welcome! We expect that places will fill up quickly so do reserve a spot if you're interested. If you have signed up but can no longer make it then please do let us know as soon as possible at this address: [email protected].

If all spots are filled, sign up to the waiting list as depending on interest we may be able to make more spaces available!

Please arrive by 8:45am on the day for registration and setup, more details on the hackathon website.

About CSED

The UCL Centre for Space Exochemistry Data (CSED) is an interdisciplinary hub that will take exoplanet science and astrochemical research to a new level by facilitating connections between observational data from space missions, deep learning techniques and quantum physics modelling of complex molecules.
