About this Event
The building of the Victoria Bridge/Viaduct began on 17th March 1836 and was completed, for the Durham Junction Railway Company, the Board of which was composed of the Mayor and Burgesses of….Newcastle….. on 28th June 1838 at a cost of about £40,000. It was opened to rail traffic (with the almost inevitable accident) on 24th August 1838 and remains in place today – perhaps to be used again soon?
Here’s the illustrated story, as far as I have been able to gather it, from a wide range of sources.
Peter Welsh, currently resident in Washington, used to run under the bridge regularly, now walk under the bridge, more slowly; history teacher in Sunderland for 37 years; a member of Durham County Cricket Club, Wessington U3A and Washington History Society; the world ‘s expert on Washington Great War soldiers; regular speaker at local groups and societies (all fees to SSAFA).
