About this Event
Sharing History, Heritage and Culture through Creative Media & Filmmaking
Lonely Tower Film & Media is a film making company based in north east England, specialising in historical documentary films. The quality of their work is paramount and this is demonstrated in the showing of their documentaries on local television and across the nation. Although based in County Durham, Lonely Tower works all over Britain and beyond.
Marie is a writer, photographer, and documentary producer. After gaining her degree in Film and Media, Marie worked in the media industry before leaving to set up the business Lonely Tower Film & Media with her partner Mark. As well as writing about visual practices like photography and video, Marie is also the author of three history books: Sunderland Industrial Giant (The History Press, 2017), Secret Sunderland (Amberley Publishing 2019), and Celebrating Sunderland (Amberley Publishing 2023). Marie writes articles about heritage, culture, and place – you can read recent articles in publications like This England, The Northern Echo, and Landscape magazine.
Mark is a broadcast media professional with over 30 years’ experience. In 2013 Mark set up Lonely Tower Film & Media with Marie and has spent the last decade producing short and longform documentary films. These productions primarily highlight the history and heritage of north east England.
Working with local councils, heritage organisations and funders Mark & Marie have tackled stories as diverse as Sunderland’s Brewing history, County Durham’s First World War heritage, railway innovations across the region and, most recently, the culture of the Durham pit villages and their lasting legacy.
