Synopsis
Crossing Delancey is a warm and charming romantic comedy by Susan Sandler which inspired the Golden Globe-nominated 1988 motion picture of the same name. Isabelle Grossman, “Izzy”, is a young modern Jewish woman who works on New York City’s upper West Side at an independent bookstore. But none of this matters to her feisty, colorful and traditional grandmother (“Bubbie”) who worries about her. She hires a marriage broker who introduces her to Sam, a pickle vendor on the Lower East Side. Isabelle doesn’t believe she has anything in common with Sam, and seems infatuated with Tyler, a successful writer who is highbrow and sophisticated. Will she choose the handsome and urbane author or the gentle, wise and unpretentious pickleman? This heartwarming, smart and funny story explores the bonds of family, tradition, cultural clashes, and the romantic benefits of a new hat.

Director’s Notes
If you have ever seen the movie starring Amy Irving and Peter Riegert, then you are aware of the charm of this warm and funny rom-com. And while it takes place in NYC, accents are not necessarily required for all of the characters – especially Izzy and Tyler. However, since the main characters are Jewish, conveying their ethnicity would be important for the authenticity of the characters and setting.
I love this clever and heartfelt play, and feel in these times of social division, and the alarming rise in antisemitism, it is important to reflect the humanity, warmth, charm and “mishegoss” of the characters. Thank you for your interest in this play!
