What is all this talk about critical minerals?
About this Event

The terms “critical minerals” and “rare earth elements” are used frequently in the news media these days, particularly by politicians, but many people (including journalists and politicians) are uncertain as to the precise meaning of these terms. So, what are critical minerals? Why are these mineral commodities more important than others? How are they determined and who makes the determination? How important are these mineral commodities to the overall American economy? What chemical elements are considered rare earths, and why are they so important? Where are these resources found in the United States? These current topics, and more, are to be discussed during this 2-hour presentation designed for a general audience. There will be a restroom break midway.

The Lecturer:

Dr. Terry Panhorst PhD, PG. (University of Nevada), Retired Professor of Geology and Geological Engineering at the University of Mississippi. Dr. Panhorst is very involved at the Idaho Museum of Mining and Geology in Boise, assisting with outreach activities and special events. He also leads upper level geology field tours and is a frequent lecturer for both the museum and outside organizations.
