Join us for a unique opportunity to think collaboratively about how to create greater inclusion for people with disabilities.
Led by Dr. Lalenja Harrington and the students in her course Devising Inclusion in a Global World, this program features a production of legislative theater. What’s legislative theater? It’s part of a public theatre tradition that uses drama and real-time feedback to create and propose policy changes in response to inequities. Dr. Harrington’s students are exploring disability and access through the exhibition Crip*: Artists Engage with Disability and by conducting interviews with people in the disability community. They’re using this research to generate short, theatrical scenes that explore accessibility challenges.
On November 16, these will be performed live by actors. After we watch the scenes once, actors will replay each scene and provide opportunities for any of us in the audience to become “spect-actors,” to intervene and improvise possible resolutions for each scene. Everyone attending the legislative theatre session then takes part in generating and voting on policy recommendations that can be shared with local decision-makers.
Sound interesting? Are you curious? Legislative theater works best with a large and varied audience. No acting experience is required, and there are many ways to participate without stepping foot on the stage! Please join us.
