About this Event
Join us for a gentle afternoon with plants and herbal tea! This multisensory workshop is an opportunity to slow down, unwind and reconnect with nature through creativity. This workshop is focused on photography, drawing, mark making and observation.
Surrounded by plants from the garden, we’ll shoot a 35mm film of photographs and collectively develop the film using a blended tea of medicinal herbs. While the herbal chemistry works its magic, we’ll spend time drawing and journaling in response to snippets from the garden.
Being mindful of the present moment, the focus of the workshop is to tune into the intricacies of nature through observation, photography and mark making. Zero darkroom, photography or drawing experience is needed.
A print of one of our photographs will be posted to you after the event. Delicious herbal teas will be provided.
This workshop is brought to you by Charlotte Smithson, one of the artist from The Sustainable Darkroom's Photographic Garden Residency. Between September 2021 - September 2022 The Sustainable Darkroom supported 12 artists to realise research that links the garden to darkroom practice. These workshops present some of the ideas and research developed during this residency.
These workshops are being supported by Take It Easy Lab, a family-run indie film lab based in Leeds.
Tickets are offered on a sliding scale, which has been made possible by funding from Leeds Inspired, part of Leeds City Council.
Charlotte Smithson is based in Manchester and has exhibited across the UK including at the Garden Museum, RHS Chelsea, Larmer Tree Gardens at End of the Road festival, The Whitworth and has collaborated with Manchester Met Uni, the National Trust and the Oak Project in partnership with Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the University of Derby’s Nature Connectedness Research Group.
A close affiliation with nature is at the heart of Charlotte’s practice. She explores her ideas through immersive installation, stitch, drawing, photography and plant studies. She is especially interested by the vital role of nature connection in an individual's commitment to protect the environment.
