About this course

An opportunity for learners to try out their ideas for writing a short story/ potential novel, using writing exercises, examining published work and culminating in writing an extended piece of writing

What will be covered on the course?

  • We will look at published work and analyse the writing
  • We will take part in a variety of written exercises to practice different styles of writing
  • We will consider appropriate content and vocabulary and discuss individual ideas
  • Learners will practice writing through a variety of exercises and will be given feedback to enable improvement
  • Learners will plan and create an extended piece of writing

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

  • To recall technical terms
  • To understand the importance of narrative arc
  • To analyse the techniques used in published writing
  • To apply knowledge by trying out a range of styles
  • To evaluate own and others’ work by giving and receiving peer feedback
  • To create and edit an extended piece of writing

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course?

  • Some writing experience
  • An interest in reading and writing

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).

As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
