About this course
This course is aimed at new or established writers, who are either already experimenting with using poetry in their writing, or who would like to learn about this approach for the first time.
We will look at:
- Introduction and types of poetry
- Elements of a poem- Language, structure and style used
- Assignments, including discussion prompts and writing exercises
- Opportunity to share your work (not obligatory)
- Analysing sonnets, ballads, acrostic, cinquain, haiku, free verse and elegy
- Use poems and images as prompts to write
- Feel confident about writing a poem
- Understand more about rhyme, rhythm, meter and structure of a poem
- Write and edit three or more poems
- Differentiate between sonnet and ballad
- Develop a developmental feedback approach to own and others' work
As this course is online a suitable device such as laptop, smart phone , tablet or computer will be required to access the course. Teams will be used for the live sessions and the link will be sent out once enrolment has been completed.

To secure your place on the course BOTH the following must be done:

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.
Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
