About this course

This is a brief course inspired by the concept of the quest myth. We will look at the myth of the Holy Grail and other stories based around journeys. Learners will analyse the characteristics of these stories and create their own story based around a journey.

We will look at Arthurian legend, specifically the Holy Grail. Alongside this, we will look at other stories following a quest journey structure, considering the link between the external journey (events) and the internal journey (character growth). We will also consider the use of journey as a metaphor for the change process. Learners will be provided with opportunities to examine and analyse extracts of writing and to take part in writing exercises; they will also have opportunities to work with their peers. The end goal is for learners to create their own journey story, whether in the style of a myth or a more contemporary version.

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

  • Recalling elements of quest/ journey stories.
  • Understanding the way the character’s growth is affected by the events in the story.
  • Examining features of published work.
  • Experimenting with ideas.
  • Evaluating own and other’s work and responding appropriately.
  • Creating a story based around a journey (metaphorical/ spiritual/ physical)

What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course?

  • An interest in reading and writing; an especial interest or curiosity in myths and legends would be an advantage.

Learners should bring a pen and paper
