About this Event

Do you work in the Film and TV Industry? Are you looking for a way to get your vision noticed or take it to the next step but just don’t know how? Look no further as this September Creative UK: Manchester present a brand new workshop designed to take you through the journey from Development to Distribution facilitated by course leader Angus Finney.

Blueprints for Film and TV is an unmissable free intensive workshop aimed for anyone based in the Greater Manchester Region and working in the Film and TV subsector looking for professional insight into this fast-paced industry. Participants will gain industry knowledge about building a sustainable business model and the demands and challenges facing content makers in the current climate. Angus will be giving expert advice on business planning, the complex landscape of finance and distribution and how to pitch and present your story.

The workshop programme will comprise of 4 eye-opening sections that will be covered over 2 days:

• Development, rights and IP: 360-degree business models based on IP exploitation, development funding - cost, control and premiums. Space allowed for discussion

• Financing models: key fundamentals of film, TV and streaming financing and how they differ

• Pitching and presenting, project materials, packages and contract negotiations: To examine pitching and presenting skills, project packaging, brochures, materials, working with a sales company, and the art of negotiation.

• Audience and Market/ Distribution targets: The streaming wars and the impact on audience behaviour; traditional theatrical distribution and marketing strategies


When and Where:

The in-person workshop will be taking place over 2 full days on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd September 2022 at Manchester School of Art.

Catering: Refreshments and lunch will be provided on both days.


About the Course Leader:

Angus Finney is an experienced film business specialist, author, and an executive producer. His current work includes executive producing for Manchester’s horror outfit Grimmfest and US/UK’s Dancing Fox. He is an executive producer on the upcoming Danish film, “Nothing” (to have a theatrical release May 2022) and Greenland-set series “Top Of The World”. His third edition of The International Film Business: A Market Guide Beyond Hollywood (Routledge), published in April 2022, and is a regular senior contributor to Variety. Finney managed Europe’s only Film Production Finance Market for 10 years and is the former managing director of Renaissance Films in the 2000s.

He teaches at Judge Business School, Cambridge University, where he is a Fellow and Coach for the Culture, Arts and Media MBA concentration. He is currently a visiting professor to the Beijing Film Academy, and a Course Director at the UK’s National Film & Television School and the British Film Institute. He has published four books, including The International Film Business: A Market Guide Beyond Hollywood (2015).

Places are limited and therefore participants must be able to commit to both dates outlined above. The deadline for registrations is on Thursday 15th September at 5pm. Places on this workshop will be allocated on a first come, first served basis (subject to eligibility criteria).


Eligibility Criteria:

Due to funding restrictions, to be eligible to apply, you must be:

- Based or trading in Greater Manchester

- A registered SME or freelancer with the ability to produce your companies house registration number or UTR (Unique Trading Reference) number

- Employ fewer than 250 staff

- Turning over less than €50m

This Intensive workshop is brought to you by Creative UK: Manchester - a programme designed to provide specialist support to SME’s, sole traders and start-ups across the whole creative sector who are based in the Greater Manchester region with the aim of supporting the businesses at every stage of their journey. The programme is fully funded through the European Regional Development Fund and the programme is delivered in partnership with Manchester Growth Hub and Northern Powerhouse.
