Coil, slab, pinch, build and sculpt – there is so much you can do with clay!
About this Event

SUNDAYS 2.30-4.30PM

This workshop is a great introduction to working with clay using handbuilding techniques, and you will be amazed at the skills you will learn, and what you can make during this half-day class.

Before ceramicists invented the pottery wheel, handbuilding was the only way to create functional and artistic ceramic forms. The oldest known ceramic artifact was handbuilt and is dated as early as 28,000 BC.

All you need to get started is clay, tools, your hands and creative enthusiasm. We’ll supply the clay and tools, and our expert teacher to guide and teach you - and you bring your hands and creative enthusiasm!

You will learn how to make a pot or vessel through a variety of hand building techniques including:

- handling your clay

- working with your pottery tools

- utilizing coiling, slabbing, pinching, building, and sculpting methods

- shaping your piece

You may take as many of your pots home with you as you like (please note the pots will airdry over a few days and may then be used for display - they will not be glazed or watertight). Please bring small boxes (like Tupperware or cardboard) to bring your creations home with you.

If you would like to give this workshop as a gift please take a look at our Gift Cards here.

Where: This workshop runs for 2 hours in our lovely Arran Street East studio at number 43/44 Arran Street East, Dublin 7 - right in the heart of the Dublin Fruit and Vegetable Markets area. Eircode: D07 W226 Google map.

Materials: We'll provide all the materials you'll need, but please bring your own apron and towel to prevent your clothes getting wet with clay.

1.Who is this course for? This workshop will suit beginners looking for an introduction to working with clay, or those who have worked with clay before and would like a simple refresher.

2. Is there an age limit for the Workshop? This course is generally for people aged 18 and above. A teenager over 15 may attend if they are accompanied by an adult. Please let us know in advance.

3. Do I need to bring anything? Please bring an apron or an oversized T-shirt with you - this is to cover your clothes from water and clay splashes. Dress comfortably so that you do not mind getting splattered in clay (which washes out in any event).Bring your own handtowel to wipe your hands off from clay and water. You will be able to see your pots better if you keep your hair tied back, and it is important to have your nails short if you’re throwing on the wheel.

5. COVID19: Please follow HSE recommendations if you have symptoms or if you tested positive for Covid19. Hand sanitizers are supplied for your use before, during, and after your class. We are required to keep the windows open for ventilation purposes.
