Join us for a special papermaking workshop that blends art history and hands-on creativity.
PEM’s Curator of Korean Arts and Culture, Jiyeon Kim, will begin the workshop with a one-hour tour of the new Korean Art gallery. Besides an overview of PEM’s Korean collection, this tour will provide a more in-depth view of the paper objects displayed in the gallery. The participants will also have a chance to observe a paper jar made by Jongkuk Lee and explore its historic inspirations.
After a break for lunch, participants will proceed to the Create Space for a papermaking workshop with Jongkuk Lee, a hanji (Korean paper) artist and educator. He will share the long tradition of Korean papermaking and its wide use in craft, clothes and architecture, and talk about the creative potential of paper as a natural and recyclable medium. Participants will take home sheets of paper they made and may have an opportunity to create various practical objects, such as fans, fashion items and coasters.
This event is part of the opening weekend celebrations for PEM’s Korean Art gallery and Jung Yeondoo: Building Dreams.
PEM’s Creative Foundations classes are designed for both beginners and advanced practitioners seeking new challenges. These workshops blend access to our rich and diverse art collection with personal instruction from experienced educators and professional artists, making each session an immersive and enriching experience.
Public programs with Jongkuk Lee are supported by the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation, Korea.
About our Collaborators:
Jongkuk Lee
Jongkuk Lee is the current head of Mabuel Gallery and a nature artist who creates crafts using hanji (Korean paper) from his home-grown paper mulberry trees. He also utilizes other natural materials such as bamboo and silvergrass to talk about the environment. In the late 1990s, he settled in Bulat Village, a town in Cheongju, South Korea, famous for its hanji, and has been carrying on the tradition of hanji making ever since. Since the late 1970s, Bulat Village had been losing its tradition as the demand for hanji has decreased due to urbanization and industrial development, but Lee’s work has helped revitalize the village.

Kim earned her Ph.D. in Korean Art History from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her recent research topics include social status and artistic identity, collecting history of Asian art in Boston area museums and gardens as social space. She actively participates in the cultural life of the Korean community in the greater Boston area and across New England.
