About this Event
Why are you flinching from your own creative power?
What are your tools of distraction?
When do you feel most able to put down those distractions and turn back to your creative power?
Please join us for Creative Detours: Go to the End of it—a screening, discussion and writing workshop (facilitated by Bridgett M. Davis and Camille Bacon).
An exercise in finding ways to notice, name, and dislodge detours to our creative potential, this program draws from Davis’s short film Creative Detours (1992), which is inspired by a quote from writer and filmmaker Kathleen Collins: "If there is any way in which women tend to be self-destructive it is in that area of creativity where they actually feel their own power and can’t either acknowledge it or go into it with as much… They can’t go to the end of it. They get scared and they retreat into illness or into having too many babies or destructive love affairs with men who run them ragged. Somewhere or other, they detour out of a respect for their own creativity" (read the full interview here).
We’re compelled by the idea of squaring our shoulders to the questions that lie unanswered within us. Beyond arriving at the questions themselves, we must then also attune to the coiled answers that lie in wait. Together, we will endeavor to enter a psychic and emotional space of sustained listening to the ringing bell of the questions and the answers alike.
