Join cartoonist and author Chuck Whelon for a fun, hands-on cartooning workshop at Sour Cherry Comics in San Francisco!
In this lively and imaginative session, you’ll invent your own comic or sci-fi characters inspired by Astrokitty in Urfspace. Chuck will demonstrate character design basics, share drawing and storytelling tips, and lead a collaborative “Exquisite Corpse”–style game where participants create wild alien heroes, cosmic rock stars, and other intergalactic weirdos.
Participants will:
- Learn the fundamentals of cartoon character design
- Create their own space-faring characters
- Develop names, powers, and backstories
- Take home their drawings and ideas
- Get behind-the-scenes insights into comics, self-publishing, and creative careers
No experience necessary — all ages and skill levels welcome! Drawing materials will be provided, or bring your own.
After the workshop, stick around for a book signing and open drawing jam with Chuck, where you can pick up Astrokitty in Urfspace and other titles, get sketches, and chat about art and publishing.

About the Artist
Chuck Whelon is a San Francisco-based cartoonist, illustrator, and author, best known as the creator of Astrokitty in Urfspace, Pewfell, and numerous puzzle and humor books published worldwide. He hosts livestreams on the Urfspace YouTube channel and is passionate about helping others bring their creative worlds to life.
