Course Description:
What is an "authentic character" anyhow? Isn't that an oxymoron?
Here's a little not-so-secret: we all spend most of our lives playing various roles. And we often convince even ourselves. Award-winning performances are all around us, all of the time.
All the world's a stage, after all.
But when the stage -- or the film set -- is right in our faces, and we're trying to "be" somebody we just "met" a few weeks -- days -- hours -- ago, how do we convince anyone, let alone ourselves? Spoiler alert: The answer is definitely not to 'try harder.'
Join veteran theatre and film actor Mark Claxton on a highly active and interactive, practical and provocative, five-week journey through the process of 'becoming' someone else for the stage or screen. Workshop participants will choose a dream role for themselves and collaborate with Mark and their fellow explorers on inhabiting the character. It will all culminate in a performance nourished by a fun, no-pressure, safe environment and by practice in the invaluable actor's skills of listening, listening, listening some more -- and then utterly letting go.
Instructor:
Throughout a 16-year stage and film career in Saskatchewan, Mark has brought to life a wide variety of characters, from Felix Unger (The Odd Couple, Souris Valley Theatre, 2014) to Bob Cratchit (A Christmas Carol, Globe Theatre, 2016) to the cruel and ferocious George of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Ekstatika Stage/Screen, 2019 & 2022). He has twice been nominated for (and once awarded) Best Performance honours by the Saskatchewan Independent Film Awards and made multiple appearances on such Saskatchewan television staples as Corner Gas and Little Mosque on the Prairie. As a director, he has worked with community theatre performers, university theatre students, and seasoned professionals. His directing credits include Stag and Doe (Souris Valley Theatre, 2023), Blood Relations (University of Regina, 2018), Vimy (Regina Little Theatre, 2017), and Never Swim Alone (The Golden Apple Theatre, 2015).
