SYNOPSIS

Reboot IT For All CIC [Reboot IT For All – Bridging the Digital Divide for a Connected Community] has been formed to champion a local focus on removing digital poverty for all – starting in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire. Stoke-on-Trent has some of the most concerning income deprived statistics in the UK. As a consequence, many are being digitally left behind without access to devices, connectivity, digital skills and technical support, despite there being a significant commercial digital business sector.

The first stage of this initiative has been to create a locally based IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) organisation, with a particular focus on getting the local business community in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire to dispose and recycle their IT equipment in a safe, ethical and environmentally friendly manner – that will then be re-purposed for re-use within their local community. Importantly, Reboot IT For all CIC does not wish to supply devices directly to the end user (general public), instead operating via registered ‘issuers’ that are already working with these deprived individuals. It is planned that much of the day-to-day operations of this ITAD will be undertaken by volunteers, so providing them with technical skills and a pathway for further learning and/or employment.

A Digital Divide Working Group (DDWG) has been formed with the support of the Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce to be a ‘catalyst for collaboration’ across the region, providing an opportunity to bring together existing third sector organisations that are already working to reduce digital poverty, our local government initiatives and also make effective use of suitable national initiatives. The goal is to create a sustainable and joined up answer to ending digital poverty in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire, by first focusing on hardware re-purposing, whilst supporting existing third sector organisations and building a collective purpose with all interested parties.
