Discover the art of traditional cornhusk doll making in this hands-on workshop led by Cherokee artist Laura Walkingstick. Participants will create a one-of-a-kind doll using natural materials such as soaked cornhusks, twine, and fabric scraps—guided through a step-by-step process rooted in cultural tradition and personal expression.
Each doll becomes a symbolic creation, whether it holds a memory, story, or simple intention. This is a relaxed, creative space meant for those who want to slow down, work with their hands, and connect with a meaningful art form.
This workshop is designed for adults and older teens. It is not suitable for young children due to the reflective pace and materials used.
You’re welcome to bring meaningful fabric pieces (perhaps ones that carry memories of loved ones or hold special significance in your story) from home to incorporate into your doll’s clothing.
About Laura Walkingstick:
Laura (Eastern Band Cherokee, Wolf Clan) is a self-taught doll-maker and multidisciplinary artist based in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Her work draws from Cherokee traditions, childhood memories, and a deep interest in storytelling through handmade forms. Laura holds a BFA in Studio Arts and a Master’s degree in Art Therapy, and has over 15 years of experience doll making, and several years teaching community workshops in cultural, educational, and art settings.
