Kia Ora all, and happy New Year! 🥳We hope 2026 is off to a flying start.
Here at Tucker Beach, we wrapped up 2025 on a high with a bird survey of the Shotover River reporting record numbers of nesting dotterels, black-billed gulls and terns. This is fantastic news - but more birds means we urgently need more viable nesting habitat 🐣
Braided-river bird species rely on open gravel beaches for nesting and shallow braided channels for feeding. Invasive woody weeds, particularly buddleia (butterfly bush) have rapidly colonised these areas, removing gravel habitat and making it unsuitable for breeding.
The Tucker Beach Wildlife Trust has made huge progress restoring breeding grounds, but our birds need more space!
That’s where we need you.
💪CALLING HARDY VOLUNTEERS 💪
We’re looking for a team of fit, strong volunteers to help #BringBackTheBirds on Sunday 25 January.🙌
The work is physical and involves:
✨Cutting down buddleia using silky saws and loppers
✨Pasting stumps with glyphosate gel (training provided)
To thank our hardworking crew, we’ll be shouting a celebratory BBQ after the clean-up 🌭
We’re proud to be supported by volunteers from Queenstown Trails Trust, Wakatipu Conifer Control Group, and Rotary Club, and together we’re keen to raise the profile of the ecological importance of Queenstown’s iconic Shotover River ❤️
Scan the QR code on our poster or register with our online form here: https://forms.gle/7JqRNE9oTDKUWtnU9
