Back in the 1980s, Lansing, Michigan was a destination scene on the national map of punk rock – but, today, you’ll seldom hear it discussed. “Crashing the Capital: The History of Punk Rock in Lansing” seeks to bring this past to life and educate the public about our community’s most significant musical moment. Starting at 4PM on February 28th at The Fledge, a historical exhibit of concert footage and photos, zines, show fliers, and venues then-and-now will be open to the public. This will be followed by a panel discussion at 5:30 PM, bringing local legends such as Tesco Vee of the Touch and Go Zine and Steve Miller of The Fix to talk about their first-hand experience with the hay-day of Lansing’s punk subculture. At 7:15, our event will then conclude with a musical performance by local groups Dogsneeze, Cicada, and Faceless which recreates a seminal show that happened right here in 1981, featuring The Fix, Necros, and Black Flag. Anyone is welcome and admission is free! Come and learn how a working class, DIY art movement forever changed Lansing’s cultural identity.
