Notes on Hides:
Deer has a unique resonance that embodies grace and ancestral connections. If you like to tone with your drum, it can be the best choice. Many people prefer it for ceremonial use.
Elk gives us beautiful hides with wonderful tones. The vibration of elk is instrumental in opening the third chakra. Elk helps to cleanse and purify, leading us to unity with spirit and our original grace. Elk is the recommended hide for a first drum.
Horse has a wonderful, deep resonance and usually holds up better than elk or deer in our humid midwestern summers. It can be very grounding, yet was used by many indigenous shamans for journeys into the earth or the cosmos.
Buffalo/bison hide drums are known for their durability and strength due to their thickness. This thickness creates a deep sound that is wonderful for meditation or shamanic journeys, but it is much tougher to work with as a drum maker. A buffalo drum will last decades with a bit of care.
