Pioneering slam poet C.R. Avery is a relentlessly creative musician, author, filmmaker and visual artist. Rumour is his early days were spent beatboxing East Vancouver’s streets while pushing sound equipment in a shopping cart. His sharp poetic lyrics uncover tough topics inside harmonica and beatbox solos in a rarefied experimental rock/blues/gospel/rap mash-up. For him “an album gives a song and its comrades legs to stand on. A composer gets them into the world where they get a running start and do their job, so they grow wings, W**d, or shoot lightning bolts in a bank while the bass player robs the vault.” His creations are impactful and empowering -- “sometimes hate needs a kiss.” Have your mind blown and your soul reborn, because while God’s away on business, C.R.
