About this Event

This event is planned because respondents to the Nottinghamshire Alliance Training Hub (NATH) Primary Care Training Needs Analysis (TNA) 2023/24 suggested the topic as a local training need.

Aim of this Event

A stethoscope is a tool in many health professionals arsenals but for people new to the skill, it can be difficult to know where to start, how to use it effectively, what to listen for and what it all means! This event is to get you started or to build skills and confidence in respiratory assessment and use of a stethoscope.

Join Dr James Waldron - GP Educator, for this session on chest auscultation: what to look for, what not to miss and ensuring best practice when starting to listen to chests.

This event is to introduce and upskill healthcare professionals in chest auscultation skills. It is an introductory and confidence building session.


Target Audience
  • This event is for General Practice Nurses, Nursing Associates, Healthcare Assistants, General Practice Assistants, Pharmacists.

  • 9:00 - 9.30 Joining and registration
  • Introduction to overall respiratory assessment
  • Auscultation and chest examination, what to listen for and why?
  • Improving confidence in using a stethoscope - practical workshop
  • Case studies

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, you will have been:

- Familiarised with auscultation and chest signs

- Be aware of the process of auscultation

- Understand how chest examination is useful for patient care.

- Understand the different sounds

- Be aware of associated conditions

- Be able to Consider A - E assessment

- Understand communication aspects

Registration Deadline
  • 26th May at 23.30
  • Please register with your nhs.net email where possible. If the event is oversubscribed, priority may be given to those who have registered with NHS addresses.
  • You will receive a certificate for your attendance. Please allow two weeks for this to be delivered to your inbox. We would advise checking your junk mail before contacting NATH for your certificate at [email protected]


Cancellation Policy

If you cancel with more than 5 working days' notice, there will be no charge. If you cancel within 5 working days and we cannot fill the space, then you/your organisation will still be charged. If you do not attend then you/your organisation will be charged.

If you are leaving your organisation or you have a member of staff due to leave and you/they are booked onto a chargeable course with us, it is the organisations responsibility to inform NATH of this. This is to ensure that you/they are removed from any chargeable course with more than 5 working days before the event date and therefore will not incur any costs. If you/they are removed within 5 working days of the chargeable course then the cost of the place will be chargeable to the organisation.



There will be a photographer present at the event, should you not wish to be photographed please tick the opt out box on the booking page.

Those who do NOT want to be photographed are responsible for notifying the camera operator of their opt-out status.
