A fable for our times | CP2 Mini Festival
Utterly spellbinding.

A charming devil arrives in a quiet village to bargain for the souls of its residents.Elizabeth should be his easiest target, having been labeled a “witch,” but her soul is not so easily bought. Unexpected passions flare, alliances are formed, and the village is forever changed. An inventive retelling of a Jacobean drama, this sharp, subversive fable debates how much our souls are worth when hope is hard to come by.
Witch is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. concordtheatricals.com
Elizabeth Sawyer - female, forties to sixties An outcast.
Scratch – male, twenties early 30s. The devil
Sir Arthur Banks – male, fifties, sixties. A wealthy and powerful man.
Cuddy Banks – male twenties, early thirties. Sir Arthur’s son. Painfully shy, a Morris dancer*. He is secretly in love with Frank, and also hates him, jealous of him.
Frank Thorney – male twenties, early thirties. Confident and successful young man, charming and ruthless. Very ambitious.
Winnifred – female. Twenties, early thirties. Sir Arthur’s servant, resigned and pragmatic. Secretly married to Frank.
Story
The play takes place in the small, fictional town of Edmonton. Timeframe, “then-ish but equally of the moment” according to the playwright. So, sometime in the past, no particular country. No particular accents required or sought. It’s about jealousy, attraction, desire of people and things, the purpose of life… the Devi’s usual playground. Then he meets Elizabeth, and is intrigued. She challenges him intellectually and makes him question his own purpose.
*Morris dancing. A form of English folk dance. It is based on rhythmic stepping and the execution of choreographed figures by a group of dancers in costume, usually wearing bell pads on their shins and/or shoes. A band or single musician, also costumed, will accompany them. A bit anachronistic, and by some, considered nerdy.
