About this Event
You are invited to the screening Saturday, February 4, 2023, at OKAY Studios, 468 Queen Street West. This will be the official release and it’s followed by an after-party where members of the ‘collective’ will be happy to meet you and chat.
What do artists do when the world erupts around them? Make art that speaks to these horrors! That’s what the collective did and in the process created the film COVID CREATIONS: SHORTS FOR A SEASON OF DISRUPTION, a documentary funded by Canada Council for the Arts as well as the Ontario and Toronto Arts Councils. Through interviews and performance excerpts of the ‘collective’s’ members the film gives provides insights and provokes thoughts - to the history of anti-Black racism, political struggles for true equality, the importance of self-care for artists willing to take on the struggle for social transformation in their art and in their lives - and how to still have fun working together!
When the pandemic took hold and anti-black racism erupted, the socially distanced wind in the leaves collective coped by creating a series of individual dance videos called ‘Covid Creations: Shorts for a Season of Disruption’, based on the poetry of artistic director charles c. smith. When venues reopened, the collective reimagined the series for the stage – and captured their work, process and reflections.
