In agriculture, cover crops are plants that are planted to cover the soil rather than for the purpose of being harvested. Using cover crops on your farm provides numerous benefits, such as improving soil health, slowing erosion, controlling weeds and pests, and enhancing water availability. This class will specifically focus on cover crops for soil and water conservation. Each year, drought conditions are becoming especially hard on farmers, who need consistent water to be able to grow their crops. In this class, participants will learn how cover crops can be most effectively employed for the conservation of soil moisture and increasing water holding capacity. The last hour of the class will be spent on a nearby farm utilizing cover crops with a demonstration of a no-till seed drill, a critical tool in the ever evolving climate-smart soil health practices. Participants are expected to drive to the farm on their own. Please dress for the weather and bring your own water and snacks if needed.

This class made possible with funding from the Washington Department of Ecology and Washington Conservation Commissions Sustainable Farms and Fields Program.
