Join us for PhD candidate Courtney Clough’s dissertation proposal defense, “Proteomic and isotopic histories of migration, health, and survival.” Courtney’s research uses cutting-edge biomolecular techniques to explore how people lived, migrated, and adapted in the past. By studying tiny chemical and protein traces preserved in teeth—from ancient Greece to Gold Rush–era California—her work helps reveal stories of health, inequality, and resilience across time.
This event is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome to come learn how modern science can shed light on the human experience of the past.

Abstract
Using proteomic and isotopic data, this project aims to create osteobiographies of health, disease, and survival during historically known migrations and periods of economic change. I will examine variation in preservation and protein expression in dental samples from modern experiments, Archaic Greece, and Gold-Rush-era California. Contextualized with archaeological and historical data, these studies explore the limits and power of biomolecular archaeology to illuminate past lived experiences and inform broader anthropological questions about inequality, resilience, and human adaptation.
