Ontario has filed a Motion to Strike in response to the claim filed by several Treaty No. 9 First Nations, supported by RAVEN through the Breathing Lands campaign. Ontario’s view is that they have complete authority over Treaty 9 territory, and the Treaty No. 9 Nations have no jurisdiction over the land and waters that they have governed and stewarded since time immemorial. Ontario's position risks rendering historic treaties like Treaty 9 as empty promises. The Plaintiff Nations are fighting to have their decision-making authority, which was promised to be recognized in Treaty 9. This will enable them to decide what happens on their territory, which is one of the largest carbon sinks in the world. Millennia of Indigenous land management has protected an incredible abundance of animals, plants, and carbon-sequestering peatlands in one of the largest intact boreal forests in the world – the Breathing Lands.
Show the Treaty No. 9 Nations you're with them in protecting the Breathing Lands. The First Nations requested court support on December 18th at 9:30am (court begins at 10am ET) at 330 University Ave in Toronto. This act of solidarity makes a huge difference for the Treaty 9 First Nations, who will have travelled all the way down from northern Ontario to argue their case should move forward to trial.
Let us know you'll be there! Having specific numbers not only shows how much support there is for the Breathing Lands but also allows the court to adjust the courtroom if necessary.
