Venture into realms of the bizarre, the fantastical, and the uncanny, where the conscious mind yields to the boundless logic of dreams. Salvador Dalí, the architect of Surrealism’s most indelible images, is an artist who requires no introduction, only profound contemplation.
West Chelsea Contemporary is privileged to present a singular selection of Dalí’s masterpieces from the prestigious Jean Christophe Argillet collection. This archive is a direct testament to the lifelong, defining collaboration between Dalí and his publisher, Pierre Argillet. It offers a rare, authenticated window into Dalí’s creative process, featuring never-before-exhibited Originals and a breathtaking array of etchings from pivotal suites like Mythology, Faust, and Surrealistic Bullfight. These are not merely prints; they are the finished expressions of one of art history's most significant partnerships.
This year, Counter Clockwise:Surrealism Reimagined, is focused on the enduring power and prestige of the Surrealist movement. We showcase Dalí’s work through a modern lens, demonstrating how his subversive vision - a blend of the subconscious, cultural critique, and technical mastery - continues to inform contemporary art, design, and culture. To fully contextualize this pivotal era, Dalí's works are presented alongside the equally visionary creations of fellow Surrealists Leonor Fini and Hans Bellmer, and Cubist pioneers Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, whose revolutionary approaches to form, perspective, and abstraction reshaped the landscape of modern art.
Presented here in Austin, a city that embraces the visionary and the unconventional, this collection finds its natural, modern home. The exhibition introduces works by Joan Miró, and Alexander Calder, illustrating how the tenets of Surrealism and the avant-garde directly influenced the subsequent creative practice and process of Modern Masters across the 20th century and now.
