Show starts at 7:30 ..........................................................
Cotton Daisy Backstep play the old ‘hillbilly’ music of the Appalachian Mountains with songs of the pioneers, haunting ballads, old gospels, shotgun totin’ moonshiners and tub-thumping dance tunes with 3 part harmonies and driving rhythms.
Helena’s enduring commitment to the Old-time music developed during her 10 years in West Virginia steeped in the local traditions. Returning to NZ in 2003 she assembled oldtime band Cotton Daisy Backstep. They have been playing cafes, folk clubs, festivals and square dances around the Wellington area appearing at events such as CupaDupa, Wellington Gardens Magic, Newtown Festival and Wellington Folk festival [People’s Choice Award 1918].
Bringing you that old 78 bacon frying sound no book-learning can give; indeed, this is the mountain roots of Americana.
What people say
“Wow you guys are amazing, I love what you do” Anonymous Fan
“I felt transported to another time” Can’t Remember who said that but it really is a recurring comment
“Helena needs no microphone, her voice just sails out and it’s a really old world sound” A guy at Wellyfest
Support Act..................................................
Kevin Mayes and Rosie Whinray sing unaccompanied traditional folk songs. Sailing, ploughing, sheep-thieving, gas-fitting, and pretty little small birds.
Rosie and Kev have gone deep into the old traditions and sing with an unmodernised asthetic bringing you an experience of a world long past, and yet still with us.
The musical traditions they embody lead to the formation of the traditional music of the Appalachians mountains 100s of years later - which you will see in the main act with Cotton Daisy Backstep. If you like folk, country, trad, Americana, this is an uncommon show you will not want to miss -
