About this Event
COPE is designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live as a typical low-income family in the U.S. It is a three-hour simulation and debriefing that provides a brief glimpse into what it feels like to walk for a month in the shoes of families trying their best to just survive with incomes between 100% and 200% of the federal poverty level. COPE is an invaluable experience for people who, instead of merely talking about poverty as a problem, choose to be part of the solution to end poverty. This training is appropriate for middle school age and older individuals.
COPE provides the opportunity to walk in the shoes of an individual in poverty and learn from those making the journey out of poverty. Virtual has helped organizations like universities, K12 institutions, churches, healthcare, businesses, nonprofits, and more.
This special session will:
• Deepen the understanding of the stresses and challenges low-income workers and their families face everyday
• Build effective policies and practices that retain, support and advance low-wage workers
• Inspire discussion on diversity and inclusion in the community.
COPE has been offered in Central Florida for the past 5 years to over 2000 cross-sector community leaders from law enforcement, higher education, public schools, non-profit organizations, and faith communities.
This event is part of the Peace and Justice Institute's free annual Conversation on Justice Conference, happening January 30-February 1, 2023. Learn more about Conversation on Justice, and the 10 free events related to equity and justice here.
