About this Event

The University of Manchester's Professor Tim O'Brien will be giving a public lecture entitled COSMIC MESSENGERS at University Place on Wednesday 12th January as part of the 30th International Symposium on Lepton Photon Interactions at High Energies.

Humans have so far been restricted to directly exploring only one planetary system amongst billions in just one galaxy amongst billions. To learn more about the wider universe, we must decode the information brought to us by messengers which have travelled here from the depths of space. These messengers can be in the form of electromagnetic radiation like visible light and radio waves, collected by telescopes on the ground and in orbit. But astronomers need all the help they can get and other techniques have become increasingly important: including the detection of extraterrestrial particles and gravitational waves. In this talk, Tim O'Brien will discuss the new things we can learn about the universe from the study of these cosmic messengers.

Tim O'Brien is Professor of Astrophysics in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at The University of Manchester and an Associate Director of Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics. He is also the science co-curator for the Bluedot Festival.

Tickets for the event are £5.00 and can be used as a £5.00 voucher redeemable on any purchases over £10 at the Blackwell's Bookstall.

The talk will be held in Lecture Theatre B at University Place on Oxford Road.
