About this Event

Talk Description

New data from schools reveals the dynamics of gender and sexuality in the lives of teachers and young people.

What lessons about gender and sexuality happen when students are chatting in class or playing in corridors? How do these impact how young people imagine their futures?

Research shows that queer young people have poorer outcomes than their straight and cisgender counterparts, but less attention has been paid to how gender and sexuality norms shape the worlds of all students. In this talk, Dr Victoria Rawlings explores the subtle complexities and sometimes shocking truths of everyday interactions at school.

In the face of calls for restrictions to specific topics to do with gender and sexuality, this talk asks us to reflect on how often-unexamined forces determine our experience of school.
